Hello Students,

I am your teacher.  Here is an example of what is expected of you for the lesson on additives.  I look forward to reading your entries.

You can avoid food additives and health
problems they may cause by eating fresh, unprocessed foods grown by local farmers. Since these foods are not transported thousands of miles, they don’t need to be packaged or pumped full of preservatives before reaching you. And since they are whole and unprocessed, they won’t contain colourings or artificial flavors.

When shopping in your grocery store, check labels for additives. Buy more whole foods and fewer “convenience foods,” such as ready-made meals. The time you spend preparing an additive-free meal will pay off in fresh flavour and increased food safety for you and your family.

You can also grow your own vegetable and herb garden and cook more meals at home from the produce.  To have a variety  of fruit and vegetables throughout the year, grown produce can be pickled, created into jams and conserves.  Tomatoes can be made into bottled sauce for future pasta use, again using natural ingredients grown in your garden.  We can also learn to eat  seasonal produce instead of expecting it to be available all year long.   If you buy bulk meat free of additives, some meat can be cured for consumption in the future.

Knowing your local supplier can also make it easier to determine where your groceries are from and keep a check on additives.  There are many more options to explore.  Being an informed user is the key to knowing what you input into your body.
